Guwahati turned into a fitness hub on Sunday morning as the Sundays on Cycle initiative rolled into its 60th edition at the Sarusajai Stadium Complex — now renamed the Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex. The event, held on February 8, 2026, brought together Olympians, national athletes, and hundreds of cycling enthusiasts to support Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Fit India Movement.
🚴♂️ The Ride
Flagged off by Assam Sports Minister Nandita Garlosa, nearly 400 participants pedalled a six-kilometre route along NH-27 and around the stadium. The rally wasn’t just about cycling — it was about showcasing fitness as a lifestyle, with yoga, dance, and martial arts demonstrations adding to the festive atmosphere.
🌟 Sporting Icons Lead the Way
The peloton featured some of India’s finest:
- Jayant Talukdar (London 2012 Olympian, archery)
- Bharat Chetri (London 2012 Olympian, hockey captain)
- Sarita Devi (former world boxing champion)
- Ashalata Devi (Indian women’s football captain)
- Sandhya Gurung (Dronacharya boxing coach, mentor to Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain)
They were joined by Fit India brand ambassadors Bibhu Moni Singha, Nisha Kumari, Divya Ahuja, and Shyamantak Ganguly
🎶 Energy & Culture
Security forces including ITBP, BSF, and CRPF lined the route, cheering riders with Hindi songs. A special kudo martial arts performance by 32 athletes from Sivasagar added a cultural punch to the event.
🗣 Voices from the Track
- Bharat Chetri: “No other platform promotes fitness like this. The government can’t knock on every door, but initiatives like Sundays on Cycle inspire all age groups to step out and ride.”
- Sandhya Gurung: “Fitness and cleanliness are habits. Cycling is just the vehicle to promote a healthier life.”
- Ashalata Devi: “It was heartening to see so many youngsters cycling instead of spending Sundays buried in tuition. Parents are realising there’s life beyond exams.”
🚴♀️ Why It Matters
The Guwahati edition showed how cycling can unite communities, inspire youth, and reinforce the Fit India mission. With Olympians and grassroots athletes riding side by side, the message was clear: fitness is for everyone, and cycling is one of the simplest ways to achieve it.
